Before you apply
- You need ID for everyone whose mail will be redirected - passport or driving licence acceptable
- You need proof of address for the old address
- Apply at least 5 working days before the redirection should start - last-minute applications won't process in time
- Decide your duration - 3, 6, or 12 months. Renewable up to 4 years total per address.
The application steps
- Go to royalmail.com/redirection.
- Choose personal or business redirection.
- Enter old address, new address, names of everyone to be redirected, and start date.
- Upload ID and address proof.
- Pay the fee online.
- Royal Mail processes the application (typically within 5 working days).
- Confirmation arrives by email when redirection is active.
What happens after
- Redirected mail arrives 1-2 days later than direct delivery would.
- You'll see Royal Mail labels on redirected items (so the recipient knows the original address).
- Some mail can't be redirected - "do not redirect" stamped items, certain government mail, and some business volume mail.
- Update senders for important ongoing relationships. Redirection is a safety net, not a permanent solution.
- Renew before expiry if you need ongoing redirection.
